Pain Points Need to Address

Greenhouse facilities heavily rely on manual labor and lack mechanization.
Traditional greenhouse vegetable cultivation relies on experience and intuition for ventilation. Inaccurate ventilation can easily lead to crop damage and reduced yields.

Project Objective

The main objective of this project is to design a “Fast Connection and Dual-Control” smart greenhouse elf that can be applied in greenhouse cultivation. It aims to address the high labor cost associated with greenhouse ventilation management and enhance the emergency prevention capability of unattended greenhouses during extreme weather conditions.

1) Hardware Control Features:

Quick monitoring of temperature and humidity inside the greenhouse

Users can view real-time greenhouse temperature and humidity through a mobile app or the “Greenhouse Elf” display, and adjust the greenhouse conditions as needed.

Automatic opening and closing of vents based on temperature

Users can set temperature thresholds on their mobile devices. When the greenhouse temperature and humidity exceed or fall below the defined values, the intelligent monitoring system automatically adjusts the temperature, ventilates, and maintains a constant temperature inside the greenhouse.

Remote control of manual vent opening and closing

Users can remotely control the opening and closing of roll-up motors via their mobile phones, enabling automatic ventilation and maintaining the optimal temperature and humidity for vegetable growth.

Users can track the historical temperature data curve to stay informed about greenhouse temperature changes.

Users receive timely notifications via the mobile app when there are significant temperature variations.

2) Software Functionality:

Work status monitoring

The app’s homepage displays weather and environmental information of the location, the number of connected devices, and provides status indicators (orange for offline, green for online) and alerts for abnormal device conditions.

Control and operation of on-site equipment

Users can adjust the roll-up motor devices on-site based on real-time temperature, vent limits, and control mode information displayed on the app. They can set automatic temperature control, manual control, dehumidification settings, alarm settings, and disable alarms, enabling real-time monitoring and efficient control of the greenhouse environment.

Add Devices

Users can add devices by scanning serial numbers and specifying the greenhouse installation, location, crop type, crop variety, and planting time.

Batch control

Users can perform batch operations such as enabling/disabling automatic temperature control, opening/closing all vents, dehumidification, and termination of operations for multiple or all ventilation fans on-site with the click of a button.

Product Progress

The R&D work has been completed, and the client have conducted pilot deployments in actual greenhouses. The project is about to be widely promoted on a large scale.

How we addressed the client’s business challenges

Developing indigenous medical devices and IoT solutions in the healthcare industry is a challenging process that requires a strong team with expertise. Upgrade and transformation of medical equipment using IoT

After initial validation, we developed a customized analysis and control system for the client, specifically designed for operating and controlling a particular instrument. Through dynamic algorithms and reagent analysis, we achieved fully automated high-speed batch testing for various pathological data.

This system not only serves as a standalone LIS (Laboratory Information System), but can also seamlessly integrate with the hospital’s HIS (Hospital Information System). We enabled unmanned, automated testing of devices such as lasers and electron microscopes, generating reports based on predefined templates. The entire system consists of a control and analysis terminal, a client-side operation terminal, and an equipment operation and monitoring terminal. Additionally, we established an IoT cloud platform to track device information and operational status through a dedicated network. This allows for remote debugging, periodic inspections, and remote troubleshooting, enabling smart operation and maintenance. As a result, it reduces the on-site presence time of after-sales personnel, minimizes the need for manual equipment operation and maintenance, and improves operational efficiency, thus saving costs.

Our Implement Plan

First, install an agro meteorological station based on solar energy, 3G/4G, camera and meteorological sensor on the farmland of each pilot. Then a web-based system will be built to display the real-time data of temperature, rainfall, wind power, soil moisture, as well as the growth of crops, so agency of agriculture and forestry, meteorology can acquire first-hand agricultural news and make scientific decisions accordingly.

At the same time, all data and functions are available on the APP, which enables users to arrange the agricultural activities without leaving home.

Implementation and Results

The project is implemented into two phases: first phase is the installation of agro-meteorological station, which works independently and wireless via solar panels and 3G/4G instead of the laying of wire and network cable. A web-based system is also built to control all agrometeorological stations. And meteorological data such as temperature, wind direction, humidity, barometric pressure, rainfall, dew point will be transmitted to the system in real time, to help farmers deal with unexpected weather conditions. What’s more, a video can be made via the camera to show the latest agricultural information. The main features of the online web system are decision-making reference, meteorological service products, actual situation of the farmland, agrometeorological data, remotely control and science knowledge of agrometeorology. Therefore farmers and related agencies can arrange agricultural activities according to the web information. One pilot has found the hidden trouble timely through the system, and its crop yields has increased substantially compared to last year.

APP development is the second phase, its implement results consist of: enabling meteorological agency and agricultural department to acquire the latest agro-meteorological information and the growth of crops; promoting cooperation among various departments, such as a fusion of meteorological agency and basic-level service project of agriculture department, water conservancy office, forest department and postal department to provide the agro-meteorological service and products to the grass-roots users, a joint action between meteorological agency and agriculture department to issue information of weather forecast, technology of disaster prevention and reduction and monitoring and forecasting of insect pests. While you passed check-in part H, you probably noticed the big luggage wrapping machines around. These machines can quickly seal the bags with recyclable clear plastic in 15 seconds. We wrote all the programs to control the big machines, cloud management service, and all related technical points.

Technical Points

PLC programming

Collect the sensor information and control the wrapping machine’s different motors to work at designated speed and round of times so that the bags can be well wrapped while saving the plastic materials.

Touchable Application Programming

The PLC is controlled by a touchable tablet, and we developed the APP with a control interface to communicate with the PLC collect information, and send it to the cloud server.

Staff management

.Allow staff to check in and check out, calculate the work hours, etc.

Data report and analysis

Develop reports for the daily revenues by staff and time.

Solution

Our team designed a cloud based solution for the project. All data are transferred to the database in the cloud in the real time.

System and Installation operation display

In the software design for this project, we provided clients with both prototypes and design drawings as the basis for development. Through desktop software, users can control the packaging machine to perform packaging operations, and they can use a desktop POS machine to complete the checkout process after packaging. Administrators can view and manage operations across multiple terminals.

In order to improve the efficiency, reliability and real-time measurement, an IoT platform featuring telemetry remote monitoring, and distant control is needed.

Client Requirements

With the original way, there are many weaknesses such as lack of analysis and statistics, limited data visualization, lack of comprehensive forecasting function, the unsightly interface, the operation is complicated to upgrade and function. Our client wanted to build a new platform with the following below:

A data center to store and manage all monitoring and measurement data

A cloud service enables users access related information with their assigned permissions

Data statistics, data online telemetry, reports, and charts for better review

Automatically and real-time monitoring, telemetry tracking system

Inspection support for daily, weekly

Monitoring personnel can use their phone to real-time data submit

Our Solution

Business analysis and solution design

Our client does NOT have any employees with IT background. So we spent near 1 month working very closely with the client team and keeping updated the work results every day with Mind Maps, Use cases, BPMN, and User story mappings.

Also, we designed a compatible solution for collecting real-time data:

With 4G Data Gateway to collect the automatic measurement Devices and send to the cloud service listener
For some special Devices (such as Leica devices), their data can be only collected by their given software. So we add triggers to their database, convert and transfer to the cloud data center
For handy instrument equipment we integrate a Bluetooth mobile APP with handy instrument equipment, so the measurement result can be sent to cloud API in real-time.
For human measurement, the engineers can enter the data into the APP, which can be sent to the server directly while working.
